Sam’s Favorite Podcasts
Found below are the podcasts I’ve highlighted on my “Favorites” page since launching my site.
Song Exploder
added august 15, 2019
Have you ever wondered what goes into making a great song? That’s the concept behind “Song Exploder.” It’s a 15-20 minute podcast in which each episode is dedicated to breaking down a single song. Artists, producers, writers and band members are all eligible to appear, and they help explain the writing, inspirations, sound and recording of that episode’s song. The artists are often critical darlings, and the genres include pop, rap, R&B, rock and even movie scores. I also love how each episode ends with the full song, so the listener can then fully appreciate everything that went into making it.
KF/AF
added April 8, 2019
I love the podcasts from entertainment company Kinda Funny, and their new video podcast, “KF/AF,” is their weirdest and funniest show to date. Hosts Nick Scarpino and Andy Cortez do the show from their “mom’s basement” and appropriately goof around by doing weekly challenges, pulling pranks in the office and judging Photoshop challenges. Their chemistry is impeccable, and I eagerly look forward to their prerecorded gag every week. Tune in to the hilarity Wednesdays on their Twitch channel or catch it later on YouTube.
Weird Heat
added december 16, 2018
“Weird Heat” is difficult to describe. The hosts often admit that. But to put it simply, "Weird Heat” is podcast comfort food. Hosted by IGN and Comedy Button hosts Brian Altano and Max Scoville, “Weird Heat” is a biweekly deep dive into a singular topic. Examples include “Disappointment,” “Writer’s Block” and “Fear.” The hosts break down what each topic means to them and share heartfelt and/or hilarious stories that go along with that topic. It’s a great show about mental health, creativity and relationships. Plus, Brian produces an amazing piece of instrumental music inspired by each episode’s theme (here’s “Optimism”).
“Believed” (Michigan Radio/NPR)
Added november 26, 2018
Let me say from the top, this podcast is not easy to listen to, nor is it fun. But it is a compelling story, told through brave journalism and even braver sources. “Believed” is a limited series from Michigan Radio and NPR about how Larry Nassar got away with sexually abusing girls and young women for years. It is an honest look at the story, and it answers many questions you may have about it.
