Writing

Words are powerful. That’s the fundamental principle that guides my writing, and I use words to surprise and affect readers. I have experience in writing profiles, features and day-turn stories. I also have a deep knowledge of AP Style. Some of my favorite pieces can be found below or within my multimedia stories.

This front-page feature story for the Columbia Missourian profiled Drake Porter, Columbia College’s 19-year-old “League of Legends” coach. It involved hours of interviews, extensive background research, securing press access and rigorous fact-checking. It demonstrates my ability to relate a niche subject like eSports to a mass audience. (Getting to write about video games was pretty cool too.)

This feature story for the St. Louis Jewish Light demonstrates my ability to incorporate multimedia into a print story. Israeli-American artist Edo Rosenblith opened an interactive mural during the summer of 2018, and my story follows his career and his passion for making art accessible to all. Because the story is so visual, I wanted to use multimedia to broaden the story’s scope. I produced a video about the making of his interactive mural and incorporated photos of Rosenblith working, as well as photos of his past work.

Israeli-American artist Edo Rosenblith explains his creative process for making a large full-room mural. His mural can be seen in COCA's Millstone Gallery this summer as part of its "Let Me Help You Make a Mural" exhibition.

This front-page story for the St. Louis Jewish Light demonstrates my ability to write an emotionally moving piece full of heart and humor. Leah Warshawski is a filmmaker whose grandmother Sonia is a Holocaust survivor. Sonia’s story is amazing, as is Leah’s story about how she made a documentary about Sonia. This profile shows how I can turn a thorough interview into a fun story while working on a tight deadline.
